Most of you already knew it, but it’s now official. I’m an idiot.

In my list of things wrong with my Camaro I confidently proclaimed that the oil leak was not the rear main seal or the valve covers. It was the valve covers. The bolts on one of them were ridiculously loose. I’m not sure how that came to be but there you are. I should know by now that if a gen1 SBC is leaking oil you check the valve covers.

Could be both, I’ve been having issues lately with rear main seal quality in all my old small block cars. If running an old crank I’ve been going to an offset seal.

Always nice when you confidently say something wrong like an idiot, think about it later, check, and fix the problem. A problem you never would have found if you hadn’t proclaimed your preconception with bravado, voicing it, leading to actually friggin’ checking.

BTW; I think your last post title got Kinja’d. Camero :)

I’m not going to rule that out, especially now, but the flexplate, torque converter and the back of the pan are all dry so I’m hoping that it’s ok. But like you say those two things are pretty notorious on SBCs so if it’s still leaking I’m going to be looking at that for sure.

That was just me playing typical Craigslist poster. Like the one guy said, my jokes suck.

Hmm... time to break out the torque wrench and make damn sure all the VC bolts are tightened to spec.

I think the spec is something like 3 ft-lbs so they’re not supposed to be too tight, that causes leaks too, nor too loose. The design basically sucks.

I just replaced the VC gaskets on my truck’s 350 a few weeks ago, and I do remember using my lb-in torque wrench on it. I don’t recall the exact spec, though; it was low, but I don’t think it was THAT low.

Whenever I’m dealing with a sketchy assembly like that, I break out the RTV. A very thin coating on both sides of the gasket before assembly seals up the leaks +and+ applies a little upward pressure to the fasteners, helping them to avoid backing out.
YMMV. . .
